again dividing the one 2 into 1's

  2+2+2+1 +1+2+2

now divide this into half

   taking 2+2+2+1 which equals 7

XII = 12 and VII= 7 and if you like take the x divided by 2 it is a v so you end up with VII which is 7 not what you said
