 X+Y=48

Y=5X

     => 5X+X=48 =>6X=48 =>X=8

I think of it this way:
5X=Y; X+Y=48;
Plug in 5X for the second formula "Y",
X+5X=48
6X=48
X=8

6X is because 1X+5X=6X

x=48/6=8
x=8
