The gas in the upper is having very low temperature so the density is high and it will be having tendency to go in downward direction. Hence it will cool all the sides of refrigerator.

We know that hot gases are always go upper and cool gases try to come down because of high density.

If ICE compartment make below side of Refrigerator than cool gases can't go upper side & upper can't become cool.
Note :- Cool gases enter in freeze through ice compartment always.

Instead hot gases of Refrigerator go upward and freeze become more hot...

Simple airflow. Hot air rises while cold air sinks. By having it at the top the temperature is held at a more even level. If it were at the bottom, the top would be warmer and the bottom would be ice.

Ice maker must be on top for the convenience of the user. Nobody will buy a ref that will make you to stoop down the ref or kneel down - just to get ice cubes.

Due to maintain the convection in refrigerator. When air is cool in refrigerator it moves downward and hot air moves upward because cold air is denser than hot air this phenomena is called as convection, so movement of air take place regularly.
