Adaptability – It can handle defects along with other issues production issues etc. Fields, queries, reports, notifications, workflow: everything should be adaptable.

Change history - Consider whether you want to track changes to bugs. Some tools maintain change histories (audit trails), which allow you to trace who did what to an issue and when (for example, who raised the priority of a bug).

Version control integration -

Customizable fields - You need to be able to customize the fields used to collect defect information. Otherwise, you’ll end up collecting only the information the tool thinks you should track, and using the tool’s terminology instead of your own.

Ease of use -

E-mail notifications - on adding, updating defects etc notification should be sent

Reports – customizable reports which can be created based on any predefined/cusom field

Security – valid authentication and authorization

Web-based client – Available across the globe without any need of installation

Workflow – Easy workflows e.g. New Defect – Open – Fixed - Closed
