Bascially in an balance sheet there will be two items i.e Real Account Items (Assets & Liabilities) another is Nominal account Items (Profits & losses), there is another approach i.e it will deals with two items one is Source of funds and another one application of funds

Balance Sheet contains the Assets and Liabilities of a particular firm/company.  It is a face of a company.  It shows companies financial position.  In Assets there will be two types. Current Assets and Fixed Assets.  In the same manner Liabilities also two types. Current Liabilities and Others.

Assets = Current Assets + Fixed Assets
Liabilities = Current Liabilties + Long Term Liabilities

Contingent liabilities appear as footnote on the liabilities side of balance sheet.
