Volume of water=5/8*20;
Volume of milk=3/8*20;

Since 4 litres of mixture is taken out therefor
Volume of milk remaining= 3/8*16;
=6
As for water
Volume= volume remaing of mixture + 4litres
=5/8*16 +4
=10+4
=14
hence milk:water =6:14 =3:7

Where are you guys getting 3/8? I thought the question gives the ratio as 3/5, meaning for 10 litres of mixture there is 6 litres of milk and 4 of water.Since we subtract 4 litres, we have 16 litres.3/5 x 16 = 9.6 litres of milk.16 - 9.6 = 6.4 litres of water.We then add 4 litres of water giving us a total of 10.4Therefore the answer should be 9.6:10.4

volume of milk before replacement=3/8*20=7.5 litre
volume of milk water replacement=20-7.5=12.5litre

volume of milk in 4litre mixture=4*3/8=1.5 litre
volume of milk in 4litre mixture=4-1.5=2.5 litre

so milk remaining in mixture =7.5-1.5=6 litre
so milk remaining in mixture=12.5-2.5=10 litre

now after adding 4 litre of water,volume of water=10+4=14 litre
                                                     volume of milk=6 litre
so, final ratio of milk and water=6/14=3/7
   =3:7

As you are taking out 4 liters of mixture, consider there is only 16 liters.
In 16 liters, milk and water is in ratio 3:5. Milk=3/8*16=6liters
Water=16-6=10liters
4 liters of water has to be added 10+4=14
so new ratio is 6/14=3/7

suppose volume of milk = 3x & volume of water=5x
so,,, 3x+5x=20....... .. x=2.5
now 4 lit.. of mixture is taken out... then remaining mixture == 16 lit.
now mixture becomes 16 lit....
so 3x+5x=16......... x= 2 lit....
so volume of milk = 3*2=6 lit..
& volume of water = 5*2 + 4 = 14 lit....
now the ratio of milk and water of new mixture is ....
6 / 14 ==3:7

Answer is 3 : 7

Steps:

Ratio of Milk : Water =3 : 5

If the Volume of Mixture is 20 Liter then,

Volume of milk in the mixture = 7.5 liters

Volume of water in the mixture = 12.5 liters

Replacing 4 liter of mixture, then the Volume of mixture is 16 litres. then,

Volume of milk in the mixture after replacement = 6 liters

Volume of water in the mixture after replacement= 10 liters

After adding 4 liters of water to the mixture the total volume of water is 14 liters.

Then the Ratio of Milk : Water is 6 : 14

That is 3:7
