What is Interoperability Testing?

Interoperability Testing can validate that two products work together and yet neither may be in compliance with the specification. This often happens when sets of two products are tested in a pair-wise manner but the sets are not tested with each other. This situation occurs for various reasons - foremost being the lack of universal test cases and unclear testing procedures. The principal risk in this sort of testing is that pair-wise subsets of the product may be interoperable, yet the overall set of products fails to communicate properly.

Interoperability testing is the activity of proving that end-to-end functionality between (at least) two communicating systems is as required by those base systems' standards.  TS 102 237-1 contains a generic approach to interoperability for TIPHON projects.

The important factors characterizing interoperability testing are:

bullet

the Equipment Under Test (EUT) and the Qualified Equipment (QE) together define the boundaries for testing;

bullet

the EUT and QE come from different suppliers (or, at least, different product lines);

bullet

interoperability tests are performed at interfaces that offer only normal user control and observation;

bullet

interoperability tests are based on functionality as experienced by a user (i.e., they are not specified at the protocol level). In this context a user may be human or a software application;

bullet

the tests are performed and observed at functional interfaces such as Man-Machine Interfaces (MMIs), protocol service interfaces and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).

Interoperability tests verify that the application can work in the production environment. Operability tests are performed AFTER or CONCURRENT with UAT(User Acceptance Testing). Plz correct me, if iam wrong.

Interoperability testing involves testing whether a given software program or technology is compatible with others and promotes cross-use functionality.

It checks whether software can inter-operate with other software component, software or systems.

The risk associated due to lack of Interoperability Testing are Loss of data, Unreliable performance, Unreliable operation, Incorrect operation, Low maintainability.
