4 tipes of catlogs we have in cognos

1.Personal Catlog: Only one user(Creator) can create/modify a catlog & report.

2.Shared Catlog: Only one user(Creator) can create/modify a catlog. But any body can create their own reports using this catlog.

3.Destributed Catlog: Here any body can change their own "personal destributed catlogs, they can create their own reports.

But no one can change the master distributed catlog.if u make any changes in master destributed catlog the changes will be effected  to Personal destributed catlogs.

4.Secured catlog:No one can change the catlog & Report it is fully secured

Here better We can choose the Distributed Catlog.

Catalog: a catalog is a file, which contains folders, columns, conditions, calculations and prompts.

1. Catalog does not contain any data.

2. It just contains the table structures and metadata definitions.

Types of Catalogs: in cognos, we have '4' types of catalogs:

1. Distributed Catalog.

2. Personal Catalog.

3. Shared Catalog.

4. Secured Catalog.

In general, we choose either Distributed Catalog (or) Shared Catalog.

A catalog is a set of instructions containing information about the data items to be retrieved and the database columns in a user friendly way.A catalog acts as an interface between the End-user and the data base thereby hiding the complexities of the data base.A catalog contains Folders,Calculations,Conditions(Filters) and prompts.Apart from these a catalog contain Metadata of the DB from where data has to be retrieved. There are four different types of catalogs available with CognosPersonal catalogDistributed CatalogShared Catalog and the secured CatalogThe Personal catalog is the default one.,Only the creator can make use of it.The shared catalog means.,A catalog is kept in a common server, where users can access it to create reports using it.(A lan/wan is significant for users to work on a shared catalog)The drawback of this catalog is if the network traffic is high, practical difficulties emerge and users can't continue with work at ease.A distributed catalog.,The best catalog from my view because,A copy is available with Master Distributed and users are given Personal copy of that.Any change in the master distributed reflects in the personal catalog.
