Software bug that makes an implementation effectively unusable; one that absolutely has to be fixed before development or Testing  can go on.

Show Stopper is a condition(Bug) where a tester could not go for further testing unless and until that bug is fixed. In this case as a tester we send urgent request to development team to fix the bug.

Show Stopper - an item or error that prevents further testing of the product or function under test. No workaround is possible.

Examples  -

1.) An installation process which does not load a component; a GPF (General Protection Fault) or other situation which freezes the system (requiring a reboot); or a missing menu option or security permission required to access a function under test.

Within a production test context, this category could also include incorrect financial calculations and even cosmetic items.

Show stopper is nothing but stopping the release at the eleventh hour.

it can happen that at the time of release a tester finds a najor bug which will affect the application badly. at this time a tester can stop the release.

let me know if i am wrong

Generally, a show-stopper is a condition that is serious enough to halt an activity, program, or process until it is resolved.

In software development, the specific meaning of "show-stopper" depends on its context.  Among other things, a show-stopper can

1) halt the release of a build to a test team,
2) impede further testing in a particular functional area, or
3) prevent the release of a software application to production.
