time=distance/speed, suppose the distance is X.it should be such that total time should not exceed 8  hours.

now the speed is  30 and 40

therefore X/30 + X/40 =8 which gives u X=120 miles

if we do in this way

average speed=2xy/x+y

speed=(2*30*40)/30+40

       =34.28m/hr

total time=8

distance=speed *time

           =34.28*8

           =274.28 miles    (its comming different)

and if we consider total time =16 hr

distance =34.28*16

            =548.57 miles

which one is correct m confused ,the way in which the question is written

plz reply soon

As fas as I can see, If the driver has an outward journey of 8 hours travelling at 40mph and a return journey of 8 hours at 30mph, the outward journey becomes irrelevant since he travels faster he will always be able to get there within 8 hours if he can get back in 8 hours at a slower speed.

The question does not state that all 8 hrs must be used therefore the maximum distance away from starting position he can picnic at is 30 * 8 = 240 miles.

Now if the question refurs to a picnic as his overnight stopping point then the maximum distance is 240 miles away, but any lesser distance is also acceptable.

If the picnic point refers to a place he can stop on both his journeys for lunch or for a break then a suitable point assuming he travels the maximum distance over the weekend would be the journey's midpoint which is 120 miles.  He may also choose to break for lunch at a certain time into his journey say 4 hours ( the halfway point on teh longer return journey) in which case he would picnic at 2 different locations these being ( 160miles on the outward journey and 120 miles on the return journey.

But there are numerous answers depending on how far he decides to travel.

Having thought more about this, the question specifies how far away can he picnic, the answer to this is 240 miles since he can choose to picnic at any point on his journey of maximum length 240 miles.

The distance he could select depends upon the 30 m/hr avg speed.
avg speed = total distance/total time
so, let the distance be d.
total time is given in question i.e., 8hr.
30 = d+d/8
2d = 30*8
d = 120
