HVOF has great success in spraying metal and cermet coatings, but the process is a bit too hot for the tungsten carbide which leads to carbide loss during spray. HVAF has been developed to spray carbides at lower temperatures. Nowadays with HVAF equipment from, say from kermetico you can reach a WCCoCr coating hardness of 1600 HV or deposition efficiency of 70% or spray rate of 35 kg/hour, which is unprecedented for HVOF.
