An air gap produces a obstacle between the path of flux due to which the reluctance becomes high...as a result the core requires more magnetising current to over come this reluctance

The main source of low power factor at which induction motor operates is the air gap between the stator and the rotor. This air gap increases the reluctance between the stator and the rotor, which enhances the magnetizing current for production of the given mutual flux between the stator and the rotor for a given supply voltage. Therefore, the no-load current of an induction motor becomes 30 to 40 per cent of full-load current, which is remarkably larger than the no-load current of a transformer for a given kVA rating. The air gap in an induction motor should be made small so that the induction motor gives better performance. The small air gap may result mechanical problems in addition to the noise and losses at the slot tooth faces.

As air gap is increased, current drawn by the machine will increase in order to operate the machine at rated value. Hence it should be kept at an optimum value.

To provide sufficient gap to rotate the rotor in the machine, it is a way to transport fluxes one circuit to another. But since it will increase the reluctance of material as the gap increases, so our aim is to use minimum air gap.

Air gap is used for the magnetic field flow. In the synchronous machine the air gap kept more than induction machines because in the syn machine stability is more important than the current drawn from the source..in syn machine the air gap is large then flux distribution will be more sinusoidal due to eliminations of harmonics. Whereas the induction machines are used in domestic purposes where the min. power consumption operation is desirable so that to reduce the current drawn the air gap in induction machine is kept small as possible.

Airgap is used to produce magnetic field between stator and rotor. Flux is produce in rotor winding, then torque develop and rotor is rotating, but if air gap is more between stator and rotor then more magnetizing current is required and also loss is more.

Air gap is used to produce magnetic flux between stator and rotor. Air gap is more uniform for the production of sinusoidal EMF in alternators to eliminate the harmonics. Air gap is more in syn machine and less in induction machine because in generation we are focusing stability, utilization focus on consumption.
