Open graded aggregate is the base of single-sized, angular pieces it is washed to remove fines, stone size can vary between 3 in to ¼ in. It has Low-settling compaction, void spaces may constitute up to 40% of the material, extremely permeable. This kind of base has a strong tendency to segregate. To keep the material more stable regular wetting by laydown and compaction process is necessary. Due to their porosity this mix is typically used for wearing courses or underlying drainage layers. It has water storage capacity of 30% to 40%. This type is preferred due to their storage and treatment benefits.

Open graded aggregate contains only a small percentage of aggregate particles in the small range. This results in more air voids because there are not enough small particles to fill in the voids between the larger particles. The curve is near vertical in the mid-size range, and flat and near-zero in the small-size range in grain size distribution curve.
