Till 10g ASMM where SGA_TARGET is used for automatic memory management with in SGA

From 11g AMM where MEMORY_TARGET is used for automatic memory management of both SGA and PGA .

If you are in 11g it is advisable to use AMM

On 11gR2 I would set automatic memory management MEMORY_TARGET=XX, then I would look on OEM the behavior of the memory and set the SGA and PGA accordingly the usage.
