in case of diesel engine the production of brake power for same capacity engine is more.

and diesel engines were worked in 2 stroke diesel cycle in which there is one power stroke in each revolution on the crank shaft, which results in more uniform power delivery from the engine to the drive system, which is the favourable for heavy vehicle.
all these reason were in support of diesel engine for heavy vehicle.

And in case of heavy vehicles we need more amount of torque instead of speed which is available with diesel engine , how ever there are high speed diesel engine used for some operation.

As we know, diesel engines have lower efficiency than petrol engines but the power to weight ratio required by heavy vehicles is met by the high compression ratio of diesel engines. Thats the reason its used

diesel engine efficiency depends upon compression ratio. CR of diesel engine is more than the petrol engine so eff. of diesel engine will be more. hence max output attained.

Its because of the way the engine is built. Diesel engines have a very long stroke in the combustion process due to the very high compression a diesel needs to run. A rule of thumb is that longer the stroke than an engine has, the more torque you will gain.

The compression ratio CR for petrol engine will be in the order of 8. The CR for diesel engine will be 14. So the pulling power / torque developed will be more for diesel engines. But efficiency is concerned for the same CR the petrol engine is more efficient than diesel engine. This is because of the additional term in the negative side of the efficiency equation
