In large type of machines the currents are high so tapping those currents from the rotating armature is difficulty in the point of view of brushes and sparks over there. So we keep armature in rest and to have the mechanical movement btn the field and armature conductor we do field rotating.

Large size synchronous machines or Alternators have rotating field winding on rotor for many reasons of them the important reasons are:-

1. The rotor can rotate at very high speeds.
2. The voltage reguired to field excitation of rotor is from 0 to 600V it depands on alternator KVA, since the DC voltage is less we can easily insulate the armature winding.

All the large size synchronous machines have rotating field winding because in the other case where armature is rotating we require four slip rings.. but in case of rotating field we can do with only..2 slip rings..!! :):)
