The stainless steels often used for propeller shafts include Types 303, 304,
316, and 630. All stainless steel shafting is strong, especially the 630 type
(which is also known as "17-4 PH"). Stainless steel shafting in salt water is
more-or-less subject to pitting which leads to crevice corrosion. Types 303 and
304 are probably worse in this respect, with type 316 being less susceptible,
and therefore better suited to salt water use. The 630 type is probably
neck-and-neck with K-500 Monel at this stage in technology for the winner in the
"best shaft material" race. It costs more than the other stainless types, is
stronger, and is less subject to corrosion.

Actually there is a steel, super duplex 2507, which is superior to 316 and 17-4. It's used in a lot of desalination equipment as it can last up to 40% longer. Of course it's more expensive but it is the best.

Carbon fiber propeller shaft is much better in all ways likewise strength, weight and it shows very lesser vibrations as compare to all type of steel shafts but the cost of this shaft is very high. so these are not commonly used in India.

The Propeller shaft is made from stainless steel due to its corrosion resistance property.

Steel used as material

for propeller shaft you need material with high torsional rigidity as well as material that can take a lot of fatigue . you can use alloy 303 or any low carbon steel with 10-18 % chromium and 5-8 % nickel.
