If a script is recorded on an application as part of one browser, can it be played directly when the same application is opened in another browser without any changes ?

Ideally you should be able to replay it. Only the statement that invokes the browser needs to be changed appropriately. Though the answer might come only after you get a chance to run the application through multiple browsers.
