Hello!
host to host communication means communication between the two host ip's(like you have seen as localhost,it gives ur ip address)...so host to host connectivity is controlled by IP i.e. Network Layer.

for clearance..Transport layer controls the communication between two ports(eg. chat windows).This layer do not know anything about the IP address's.

Similarly Datalink layer uses MAC id's (nic no that is part of your computer(node)) to communicate.So it is called Node to Node Communication
