Always positive i.e. reverse polarity will be prefered because more current will flow only in positive direction.

since in smaw electrode is to melt so it need more current thus always reverse polarity will be given to electrode and straight polarity will be given to parent metal.

else in opp. manner also u can do welding but the parent metal will be got more heat quickly due to more current which is not prefered too.
