What are the steps in moving data or databases between servers?

As my knowledge, copying of data can be done in two ways as per knowledge..
1) copying a data from one client to another.... can be done ...
sccl ie client copy
database copy can be done by DATABASE refresh, which is big process.
all what I talked is in SAP R/3 level...
Correct me if Iam wrong
