Benchmarking is the process of comparing an organization's business processes and performance metrics with those of another.  Benchmarking alone will not make any organization competitive.  However, if your benchmarking attempts to understand business practices that have set the industry standard and are considered to be "best in class," and if you successfully implement what you've learned, these actions will certainly make your organization competitive.
