What criteria do you use when determining when to automate a test or leave it manual?

It depends on the repeatability of the testing efforts. Especially when it comes to regression testing, automation, obviously, is the only and acceptable choice.

It depends on the project which we are working. If the project is customizable and used by serveral clients after small changes to the product.

The Time and Budget both are the key factors in determining whether the test goes on Manual or it can be Automated.

Apart from that The automation is required for areas such as Functional, Regression, Load and User Interface for accurate results.
