In other word you are asked if you tested GUI part of the application or server part of your application.

Both.Generally we check Front end, but functionality is always work in combination with back end.

Generally when you validating functionality of the application, you will check impact of front end operations on backend.

For Example : If you are checking insert operation. You will insert input data from front end and check whether that input data stored under correct place at backend database or not.
