Archive files are online backup of redolog filles which are used for recoverying of database when datafiles damaged. This can be when the database is in archive mode.

Archives files are files which are placed together in a bunch for any
particular work.
Benefit of this is there is no chance of missing of files while transfer from
one place to another, also you can place similar type of files together.
Mostly huge game files are found in archive mode because even a single missed
file can stop the game installation.
Also for taking backup of files.
In LINUX archive files are used in many cases. Like in taking backup of files,
for comprasson of files to take backup, for that LINUX use TAR, BZIP like
commands

Before discussing  about archive files we will be discuss about redolog files ,

these redologfiles records every operation done on the database,  so when the datafiles are damaged, we can get complete recovery of database from the backup of the database which was taken few days or hours back  and from redologfiles. But there is a problem  that redologfiles rewrited when switchlog occurs under some condition . In order to store these files
before rewriting these files can be stored in some other disk so that we can we can completely. recover the database by using archivefiles and backup of database as well as from the redolog files.
