You can use either COM/DCOM protocol or ODBC,

Based on the Data base also u can use the protocol like your database is Oracle then u can user Oracle2-tier

First, you have to understand how the application works.? Basically, understanding the communication mechansim will help you enable choose the right protocol.? Example, if the VB is communicating to a DB using ODBC, then you select ODBC.? If it is a HTTP communication, then you select HTTP.? All this require some knowledge of the application well, which may require the developers to be around to advise you.
