Retail banking refers to the banking done with the retail client (e.g. the normal people) rather than business or organisational customers

Banking is informally bifurcated into 2: whole sale and retail.

wholesale banking means the lending in bigger volume to fewer borrowers.

While retail banking means lending in smaller quantity to large number of borrowers.

Moreover it is not limited to borrowing only. All banking services given to retail clients make retail banking while all services given to those clients with high net worth is called whole sale banking.

Retail clients does not always mean only individuals. It may mean small companies as well. While clients like Bachchans and Shah Rukh Khan can mean whole sale banking.
