You can’t add them to toolbox and u can’t handle events in property window.MAIN: usercontrols can only be used within one application. Whereas custom controls can be added to GAC, which gives access to all applications

If you are talking abt asp.NET 2.0 then i must say that there is no need to use java scrip t for client side validation as in .NET 2.o itself you can use all validation controls at server side as well as client side,you just need to set true for client side validation in its property.
