I totally agree.In the scenario you are describing, it can be definitely categorised as a failure.
you can write many,but 8 seems like a suffecient number to test all possible real time scaenarios.
simply put,static testing is more like GUI testing,where we check for the functional requirements.there is no test data involved.where as dynamic testing is where we validate the system/AUT against...

posting a specific scenario ,for which we need test cases,certainly does help in getting precise respones.it seems like a good idea,also saves everyone a lot of time.
