Usage of check-in and check-out in designer

Please can anybody explain what is the usage of check in and check out in designer?

designer--> Versioning --> check in --> check out

Check in and check out is using for versioning utitlty. 7.1.1 main future is versioning utility. check out is take old code any modifications in that code u add comments for modification purpose, u can select undo check out your modifiactions are not added in server backup. checkin is using for modification mappings is saved in the server backup with your comments.
