Really a tricky question and good one also.

But as I see the question is "Do all testing projects need tester ?".

What I will say "Yes, all testing projects need tester.May be we can use testing tools, but to use those tools, we again needs tester. One more case may be, developers do the white box testing at unit level (if the project scope is limited to white box testing, may be we avoid black box testing, but when developer is doing th testing, doesn't matter, white box, at that time he is white box tester for the project.")

    Yes.

Either Black-Box Testers or While-Box Testers or BOTH.

    lack of INTELLIGENCE or ABILITY.

Yes, defenitely all testing projects require testers....be it be manual or Automated; be it be White box or Black box. But along with testers Testing projects also needs SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) or Functional Experts. they will be part of the testing project but they are not testers.

    Hi,

The answer for this question will definitely be Yes. As Quality becoming one of the most concern, it requires any application should be tested before it is released. Even for a project using Automation tools, it needs a tester since the Tester implies the logic to test the business requirements are covered. Testing will be done not only by the tester but also by the developer when it is in the Unit testing, where he will be testing against the Code. The testers will be doing the Black box testing where he will be validating the Functionality and the Performance of the application.

I think the answer "depends" on many situations. It depends on the size of the company, size and scope of the application and how much it has evolved, resources/budget concerns, stage of development, time etc.

If its a small company, chances are that the developers will be doing most of the testing. This also ties with the resources and budget concerns of the shop at hand. If the application has evolved a lot since its first build, chances are that management won't spend time and resources in hiring a testing staff - but again, it depends on the size of the shop, how educated the management is towards testing and the existing knowledge of developers towards the "overall" application. If production is close and there is no way to postpone, delay, modify schedules and the application must go live, hiring testers may simply be impossible. Also, if the application is a small-time one, it may be a complete waste of resources to hire testers. It also depends upon the number of users using the application. What if its a homegrown application used primarily by 2-10 people? Most of the defects if faced can be easily fixed. This would eventually involve UAT at the shop with fixes delivered to the shop.

Just a few ideas off the top of my head. So, do all projects need testers? You decide.
