Mainframe Testing

Hi friends,

could you explain me what is mainframe testing?, how it is different with general testing that we do in web based application or windows based application? and can we do automation testing on mainframe application and if yes what are the tools supported to automate?

As much as i know mainframe is used in the bulk application such as ERP,census,consumer statistics and financial caluclations.. Normal testing methods will be done based on the density of the applications
