Well, most of the answer for this question would be found in the requirements document of the s/w project for which the database under testing was designed.
Backend testing would be of high volume and importance in situations like, major data patches, db mergers, instance mergers etc where there is a heavy manipulation on the db and its content.
Lack of WILL POWER has caused more failure than
lack of INTELLIGENCE or ABILITY.

As part of Backend testing we have to test the data in tables As per requirement document. we have to check the following things:
* records count.
* pick some records verify the business rules.
* data calculations
* verify the data constraints.
