How many test cases you have written

Hello friends,

In interviews generally they will be asking as how many test cases u have written and how many defects u have reported and how many out of them are fixed ,how many we can say?I know it depends on the project so Suppose think insurance or some medium scale project and I have tested 2 or 3 modules then tell the answer.

Plz if we r manual tester how many?
If using tool how many ?
If I am involved both some part in manual and automation how many.


And next generally at the end of interviews they will ask as any queries then what can we ask them?

If we ask that "I want to know about u r company" it will be good?

Hi Arunna,

You are absoultely correct in terms saying it wont be possible exactly to quantify the number of testcase written or testscripts created in case of Automated testing.

But what an Interviewer generally expects as an answer is how well versed you were with your application and the its WBS - Work Breakdown Schedule.

So incase you worked on an Insurance application, you could state the modules you were responsible for and the in short theier functionality. You could also state that based on the FRS for the specified modules, you came up with x number of testcases.

NOTE : The Emphasis here is not on the number but to understand if the candidate has actually worked on the Project.

Incase you are cross-questioned as to why the number of cases were less, you could answer saying that the testcase were written with Integration Testing in scope and hence field level validations (Unit Testcases) were not covered on as such.

As regards Automation, you could frame it like - Based on the Manual testcases of which few were repeatable, these were converted into compile modules or reusable actions.
A single Driver script was driving the test execution.

NOTE : Generally the number of Automation scripts is lesser compared to Manual scripts.

As regards your questions, it is absolutely correct to enquire about the company, nature of Job and your responsibilities...

The questions you have mentioned were generally asked by the interviewer to know about their effeciency and their domain knowledge of the application which they have tested. As Umesh told suppose if you are testing a application for insurance domain you can explain the module which you are involved and the major functionalities of those module. Take any one of the functionality of that module and tell the total number of test cases that can be derived out of that. If the question is regarding the execution capability then the execution time line is totally depends on the complexity of the test cases involving complexity factors such as total no. of steps, input data, transactions involved, no. of screens etc.,

Definitely, if the automation is done on the application where the manual test cases were already done, then the total number of scripts will be lesser than the total test cases written, as it was a scripts it will collate the functionalities that were tested using more than one test case.

Surely, you can ask the Interviewer to know the details about the company.
