Google is written in Asynchronous Java-Script and XML, also known popularly as AJAX.
I am not very much sure about your answer, I think Gmail uses AJAX not Google.
Google search engin is mainly developed using Python as far as I know. A lot of functionality of Google is developed using Python.
Google front end look and feel is irrelevant for it's performance. The google core uses Python mainly... (Might as well use Perl for some portions) And ofcource C/C++.

I've also heard that google uses python. AJAX itself is not a programming language, AJAX is used to make asynchronous request to the webserver via Javascript. You can make a request to a webserver that runs asp.net application, php, python or whatever.
Gmail uses AJAX for most of their requests, but the backend is in Python with some C++ libraries I think.
I've looked at several google job offers and they always required C++ or Python skills.
