Thread: Process Flow

Can any one explain the flow of data starting with OLTP to OLAP including staging ,summary tables,Facts and dimensions.

DATA SOURCES--->DATA STAGING AREA--->DATA WAREHOUSE--->DATA MARTS.

1.DATA SOURCES--They can be operational systems or flat files or external tables.
2.DATA STAGING AREA--It is a datastore where some kind of tansformation is done.
3.DATA WAREHOUSE--It is a database where raw data,summarized data and meta data are stored.The fact and dimension tables are made here.
4.DATA MARTS--They are smaller data warehouses where data are stored subject area wise.
The data staging area has 3nf data(OLTP).Data Warehouse has denormalised data(OLAP).

There is no definite structure of a data warehouse.Basically it is dependS on your requirement.
