Thread: if i have to go for testing should i learn both black box testing and white box

I contacted STC Technologies to learn testing tools,they told me that industry is not asking for white box test professionals,and asked me to opt for black box testing,is this true?

STC would have informed you like that because, in general the White box testing is carried out by the Developers themselves. The white box testing is done against the code using techniques like statement coverage, branch coverage and condition coverage. So, for a person to do the White box testing he should be knowing both the language in which the applicaiton is developed and the testing techniques. But for a black box testing it is done against the requirements. Here the functionality and the performance of the system is tested.

Regarding the job opportunities, there are lot for the persons who knows the automation tools. There are lot of demand for a person who knows QTP or Rational Robot or Load runner along with Test management tool such as QC or Test director.

If you want to stabilize yourself as a functional tester then learn QTP along with QC, or as a Performance Tester learn Loadrunner with QC.

Black box testing is a matter of functional testing of the software. It is more of what the end user will get. White box testing is what the developer does before they submit it for black box testing. So unless you are a developer, you won't be doing any white box testing. Black box testing involves things like data validation, boundry testing, regression testing etc.

Actual Software testing is blackbox testing.
White box testing is usually unit testing & is done by developers.

So please concentrate on black box testing

Testers are intended for Black Box Testing only. So no need to learn whitebox testing as that is developers' job.

Basically there are different approachs for these ...

See if you are going to a product based company there u need to know whitebox--Blackbox--even automation and performance testing...because you will be a part of the product for a long period of time.so you need to know in and out of teh product.

but on the other hand if you are going to a service based industry there you might be needing only one technique best.because there are several dept who will take care different sectors.

so if you know whitebox testing that is good...and scope is much more...but yes blackbox is the key.Even you can learn automation tools as well.
