    Can you find the numbers

    The difference between the squares of two consecutive positive whole numbers is 25. Can you find the two numbers?

    Re: Can you find the numbers

    let us say first number is 'a' then the other number is a+1.

    It is given that

    (a+1)^2 - a^2 = 25
    => (a+1+a) (a+1-a) = 25 [ Since a^2 - b^2 = (a + b) (a - b) ]

    2a +1 = 25
    Hence a= 12
    Those numbers are 12 and 13.
