Smile If no web test then what test to perform on a web application?

    Hi All,
First of thanks to bizzzzzare for the wonderful answer for my last question.i was more than satisfied.

Recently in one of the interview i was asked:
"You have been given an application and you have to test it,but you should not perform web test on the application, then what test will you perform?"

Can any one please help me in getting the correct answer.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Hi Swarup,

When someone says dont perform a web-test on the AUT, it kinda implies that they do not want you to perform a Functional test.

So an alternative answer could, we could perform a Load test on the web application. We could decide the navigational flows and scenarios to be tested. Also based on requirements we could subject the application to Load by creating required number of virtual users.

We could also perform an Network connectivity test which would test out whether the request - response chain between the client-server is functioning properly. Incase your application is N-tier architechture, we could check if connectivity is proper across all Servers in question - App Server, WebServer, DBServer etc.

NOTE : Some would classify Network tests also as functional test. Varies from persona to person.

    Cheers......

Thumbs up Re: If no web test then what test to perform on a web application?

    Hi bizzzzzare,

    Thanks for the answer.
But what about unit test?can we say we can do unit test also as it can also provide the information that all the parts of the web application are working properly.
As for the load test we have to be assured that the flow of the application should be correct, then in that case can we go ahead with load tests?

    Hi swarup,

Even though a Unit test would qualify as a valid answer, it would still be covered as part of a web-test.

As we really cannot validate a web-page with white-box tests unless access to code is provided, we cannot cover that aspect as well.

As far as Load test is concerned, yes you are absolutely correct. We need to know the functional flow first to proceed with Load testing. So In short your answer would be -

"Perform a Unit test, understand the functional flow is working fine and proceed with a Load test"
