How to check HDD for bad sectors in Windows Xp

I want to know how to check whether newly purchased harddisk is physically intact, having no bad sectors. Is there any mechanism to check the quality of harddisk ? I want to purchase 160 GB Seagate SATA Harddisk. My PC configuration includes Intel core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz processor, Intel D945 GCPE original Motherboard, 1 GB DDR2 RAM, LG DVD writer. OS is Windows Xp SP2.

    Please suggest me.

Chkdsk (Chkdsk.exe) is a command-line tool that checks volumes for problems. The tool then tries to repair any that it finds. For example, Chkdsk can repair problems related to bad sectors
