Could someone help me to know how it is possible to operate and access the files present in a computer present in my home or office from anywhere? That is Remote Desktop technology. Does it mean that the operating system of both my computer which is in remote place and the computer which I am using to access the remote computer must be same?

You can use remote desktop to access your home or office computer from anywhere, if you configure home/office computer to accept remote desktop connection requests. Basic configuration for home/office windows xp pc goes like this..
1) right click on mycomputer -> properties->remote
tick remote desktop check box.
2) if you use firewall, refer its documentation how to enable rdp. If you are using dialup or cable net connection ie. not using static ip, each time you connect you must know its current ip address... Ie. If you try to connect to home pc from a cafe, call anybody at home and ask him to connect home pc to net & check its ip using ipconfig command and tell you!!! once you get home/office pc ip address, open remote desktop tool from programfiles->accessories->systemtools->remotedesktop. Type the ip address in connect to box & click ok. If its not connecting now...check ip & firewall configuration both at home & the location you are trying to connect from.
