Functional and Usability Testing of Website

    Hi,

What are the things to be tested in a website under Functional Testing.

And what are the testings done in Usability Testing.

For Example: Lets take a website where only registered user can login & can have his contact information(Address book) in a secured manner, And can send messages to Registered persons. Similar to "Orkut".

Then what are the functional & usability testings done here.

    Please help me.........

    Thanks,
    P.Sivaraj.

Following factors are covered during the functionality testing on websites,

GUI, Error handling, Input domain, Manipulations, Backend, Order of functionalities, Links and Content.

Only the last 2 coverages (Links and Content) are specific to website or webpage testing. The other coverages are also followed in application testing.

Links coverage is to verify all the links for their existence and execution.

Link existence means, the specified link is in the right place or not?
Link execution means, the specified link is taking the user to the correct next page or not?

Content coverage is to verify the completeness and correctness of text on the web pages.

Lack of WILL POWER has caused more failure than
    lack of INTELLIGENCE or ABILITY.

    Hi shivaraj,

Functional testing always see the functional behavior. If you have done the testing of a web site at unit level, you will see what you have , you have only controls and developers have implemented the functions at back hand. So, what you will do at that time is functional testing (I am not talking about white box testing).

When these controls get integrated with error messages and design, other then functionality you see look and feel and appropriate error messages and tool tips (user friendliness), this is usability testing.

    Now as per your example:-
For Example: Lets take a website where only registered user can login & can have his contact information(Address book) in a secured manner, And can send messages to Registered persons. Similar to "Orkut".

Then what are the functional & usability testings done here.

Only registered user can login this is functionality testing.
If user fill wrong user name or password, he get a error message , this is usability testing.

    Hope, It's enough.

I feel the example given on Functional Testing Good (Only registered user can login this is functionality testing.)

The example given for Usability testing (If user fill wrong user name or password, he get a error message , this is usability testing.) May comes under Error Handle Testing.

Usability testing means say if u have a form which contains 10 fields then " Tab setting " is kept in sequential order like F1,F2...etc

Some specific questions to be addressed in this usability testing:

Will users be able to install the application from a network or floppy with no assistance?
Can a non-PC user successfully launch and use the application?
Can users successfully navigate through the application?
Is the system status clear to users at all times?
Does the tab metaphor facilitate the ability of the user to navigate through the application?
How will users feel about using the on-line help?
Is context-sensitive help a requirement for our users?

    Hi Varmakub,

Will you tell me that what is this Error handle testing? As I know developers have to handle the errors or we can say they prevent bugs , doing so.So, what you say, I mean what is your view about error handle testing?testing of Division by zero is not error handle testing, It's again functionality testing and doesn't matter how function will handle it?Only thing matter is there should be no error, or there should be error message.
