what is the re quirement of smoke testing inthe field of software testing

Hi Manoj,
Smoke testing is nothing but an Initial test to test the stability of build. We test whether the build is acceptable for actual testcases execution. If the build has show stoppers or we are not able to work with the build then we'll reject it.
For example, Take Gmail. Suppose, U receive a build where u have to execute the test cases on Gmail for Inbox module, and Drafts module. (Assume that Inbox and Drafts are separate modules and Gmail is your application). Before executing the test cases u have to do smoke test, where u need to check whether u r able to open inbox when u click on the inbox link and some minimum functionalities. If u r not able to open inbox that'll be a high priority bug and u'll reject the build because u r not able to go for further testing.
