I’ve been asked to find a performance and load testing tool, currently the guys are using Load runner version 8.1, I just need to know whether there's a new release coming out soon or plug-ins that we can use for our new project which consist of the following:
1) Postgress Database
2) Running a J2EE platform on a Linux Server.

More likely than Not, LoadRunner can load test your server. The questions you need to ask yourself are:
1)What protocol does the client use to communicate with the PostGress DB?
-OCI, DBLib, OLEDB, , etc. Once you know this information, you should be able to choose your protocol.
2)If the protocol is not in the LoadRunner list of protocols, you can use the RDP, Citrix protocols to record actions happening against the User interface. ( I find the citrix protocol the EASIEST protocol to use)
3)If the client application was developed used .NET or J2EE, you can use the Microsoft.NET or one of the java protocols.
