Latest Browsers Versions and how it affects the programmer

The top two browsing programs of net users got a big update this month as Microsoft released Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) and Mozilla unleashed Firefox 2.0. Here we take a quick spin through some of the features to be seen in the new versions.

Microsoft's IE7 program is the beefier of the two browsers with the download package weighing in at 14.8 megabytes (MB). By contrast Firefox is a svelte 5.4MB. However, neither should tax a broadband connection.

One of the very useful inclusions in Firefox 2.0 is a live spell checker that watches over your metaphorical shoulder as you type text into any field on any webpage. It is possible to add a similar function to IE7 but only via an add-on.

It seems very unfair to me. People always compare Firefox and IE but ignore one of the most beautiful browsers Opera! All the features mentioned here were present in Opera 3 years back!!! Tabbed browsing is no new feauture for an Opera user.

Spell check too was a part of Opera. You just need a dictionary installed for it. I do like firefox a lot, but if I have to choose, my vote is Opera.

Opera has all the feautes that IE7 and Firefox2 have plus more! (For example, Opera v9.02 doesn't require Bittorrent client to download torrents! Is has an embedded bittorrent download client!)

Initial installation size is never a concern as long as it <20MB. How long would it take to download 20MB of data? Which is more, all these are freely distributable. (But, stupid IE7 is not freely awailable for download. You have to pass through Windows genuinity check. Only then it will allow you to download it.)

Anyone heard of IE7 on linux??? (I really don't think we get it for Linux).

Firefox has real good add-ons as it is open source. (You have 2000+ add-ons to choose from!!!). Though Opera is a free browser, it is not open source. Hence you find less add-ons to it).

Whatever may it be, for me the choice is simple. Opera rocks! Firefox is good too and IE7? (If you need microsoft support, you must have IE6 or higher. That's why I have it in my PC).
