hi,

Good question!!!
In the real time projects, a right combination of Record and Playback & descriptive programming is used.:D
First of all, when we choose the test cases for automation, we need to follow some strategy. What we do is, if the test case is very simple, it is executed manually. If it is very complex, it is better done manually instead of breaking heads for automating it. If it is medium complex, then it may be better automated.
In any test case, we can’t record all of the actions required. Some of them will have to be constructed using descriptive programming.
both we used depending on the application means if they are are many objects is there at that time it is very difficult to go for the descriptive programing .
there is no hard and fast rule.
But according to your convinience you can use the best approach.
What I usually follow is....
First record the scenario. Then do the Descriptive programming.
Else, if something cannot be recorded (Such as disabled fields) then strainght away go for DP
