Star schema is one in which all the dimensions (lookup tables) are connected to fact table. [ highly denormalized]
Snow flakes schema is one in which dimensions are normalized, but still fact are connected with these normalized dimensions. Although dimensions are not that big in size so you don't get a great space benefit and you loose performance, so star schema is preferred over snow flakes.
