How to play MP3 files in Ubuntu Linux?

None of the default players in ubuntu support MP3. I tried adding gStream codec library as well as Xine codec library. These did help in MPEG decoding. My players (totem, xine) both play MPEG files now. But still no luck with MP3s.

I even installed Real Player and VLC media player(In windows, I have never found a player which plays as many formats as this player does). To my astonishment still I was unable to play MP3 files.

Can anyone please lend a helping hand? (I've tried Ubuntu help from official site, they say installing either gStream library or xine library will solve my problem. But they didn't!).

Re: How to play MP3 files in Ubuntu Linux?

I did find the solution for this problem. It was so stupid of me! I was using a corrupt Mp3 file for testing my UBUNTU players.

Once I used a proper file, the players started playing the songs. I'm really loving this OS for more than one reasons. I think one should atleast try this OS. It deserves that much.

So, by default you can not play MP3 or MPEG files in Ubuntu. You have to install 3rd party libraries for it (Like gStream, Xine etc...). Once you install ANY of the libraries, the OS plays songs like beauty.

And with players like Real Player and VLC player available, you can actually play any format you can think of. It is time you switch linux. Try linux and feel the power of Open Source!

    Cheers!
