    Earth

How many places are there on earth such that u start from a point and move one mile south, then move one mile east and then move one mile north and reach the same point where u started?

(Assume earth is a perfect sphere and have no mountains and no oceans)

The two poles are the points.

    Re: Earth

My mistake. Then there is only one point. North Pole.

    Re: Earth

Any point one mile north of the south pole also works since walking "east" at the south pole means spinning around.
So there is a whole ring of points one mile north of the south pole where you can walk south to the pole, spin for a mile, and then walk back north to where you started.

    Re: Earth

Suresh How can you spin around a point? Virtually southpole is a point. And if one starts moving south from point 1mile north of south pole, you will reach this point and then there is no east-west or south there. Wherever you move, you will be moving towards north.

Hence I don't think your solution was right Suresh.
Correct me if I am wrong.

But Yes. you should consider a circle of 1mile away a imile circumferenced circel around south pole(In otherwords a circle having a radius of 1+ 1/(2*pi) = 1.1591 miles radius), then what you say will be right. Moving south from anypoint on this circle will take you to a circle of perimeter 1miles. And as you said moving east from anypoint here means you will ratate for a mile and reach the same point, then you can trace back the same path to the point where you started.

Hence theoriticalle, number of suck points in INFINITE.

The answer to the question is INFINITE number of points.

    Cheers!

    Re: Earth

    You are right kalayama!!
but why only the circle of circumference equal to 1mile?
If u take a circle of circumference of 1/n mile near south pole and move around it n times in east direction...then also you will be moving 1 mile east!!

    Re: Earth

Yes. You are right. I just told about the largest possible circle.
