Thread: best way to store your script

If you do not have a tool like Quality Center (Test Director) available. What would be the best way to store and maintain your test scripts?

Well the best way would be to have a machine setup which would be accessible to both Offshore as well as Onshore.
We create a common Repository on this machine and dump all the scripts there.

You also have online repositories like Knowlegde Exchange which can be used to store Project Information like Scripts, Estimates, Plans, Test Data etc. KX (Knowledge Exchange) assigns permission user-wise which also enables security to ensure no one deletes scrips etc.

But remember while doing so, always maintain a local copy of the scripts in your machine for double safety purpose. Also incase Onshore modifies your scripts, you always have an option of a fallback.

Yes you can use a Version control tool to maintain your scripts. But that would be accessible only within your Organization and not to the Onshore members.

So when I stated maintain a Local copy at your end, you can always use a version control tool like CVS or VSS to store your scripts. This would ensure that proper version control of scripts is maintained across the team and issues of scripts getting overwritten with changes does not occur.

I think in this case you can use Documentum to store all the Test scripts which is accessible by both the Onsite and Offshore members. Also, you can have all the versions of change available and respective access based on the hierarchy. But it is always better to store the final script in Documentum if it does not require change. If it requires frequent change then as umesh mentioned it is better to store in the common Drive accessible by both the onsite and offshore team.

I guess create a proper folder structure will also help tp maintain ...and access the scripts...
